The Joys of
Vegetable Container Gardening

Get More Veggies into Your Diet

Vegetable container gardening is the solution if you love the taste of fresh vegetables but don't have the resources - time, money, space, energy - to have a full scale garden.

Just think about it. When you're looking for ways to get more vegetables in your diet, why not grow them yourself?

Having your own small space garden is easy and fun. You'll also find that this is a great way to get fresh vegetables and liven up your home with some useful greenery.

When you're thinking about vegetable container gardening, think about your space. Do you have a porch or a sun room where you can put the containers? You'll find that many of these plants will grow up instead of out, and if you can give them a place to climb you'll be able to make sure that you get plenty of produce!

Try to make sure that the area is at least a little protected when it comes to things like bad weather and animals, but having a good place to put your veggies is easier than you think!

You have a great deal of choice when considering what containers you want to use to grow your garden . . .

For instance, bushel baskets, wooden boxes or gallon cans are great places to start, and you will find that small pots are great for green onions, while vegetables like tomatoes, peppers and eggplants will do just fine with a five gallon container of some sort.

All you need to do is add an inch of coarse gravel to the bottom to make sure that it drains well, and make sure that there holes drilled for the excess water to run off.

When thinking about soil for your container garden, make sure that you don't simply scoop it from outside. You'll find that synthetic soils that use sawdust, wood chips, perlite or vermiculite are ideal, and that you can find them pre-mixed at the local gardening supply area. Also, you can get plenty of peat moss and fertilizer there, to get your garden started.

Just about any garden vegetable that can be grown in your yard can be grown in a container.

Tomatoes are ideal, as are onions, eggplants and peppers. Radishes, cucumbers and some squash will also do quite well, so don't let your lack of outdoor space stop you. Start your vegetable container garden today!
