Organic Container Gardening Explained

Container Gardening au Naturale

Organic container gardening is for those who love the idea of gardening naturally, without synthetic fertilizers, chemicals and pesticides.

It is a method of growing produce without the need for a lot of space or resources. It's for people who have small yards or no yard at all. Plus, it's a great way to grow some of your own food.

At the most basic level, container gardening is essentially the cultivation of plants in a container. Depending on the size of the container and the space that you have available, you can grow a wide variety of crops, or you can keep the project very modest, depending on your taste.

The great thing about container gardening is that you don't use a lot of soil and water. Also, if you choose and plant low maintenance crops, you'll spend a lot less time working on the garden overall.

Check out some organic container mixes at the local garden center, or you can make your own.

Home-made container gardening soil should be one part garden soil, one part compost and one part sand, though you can also add perlite for good drainage.

In general, most plants can be grown in a container, as long as you have enough space. Remember though, light is still important, and your plant needs enough of it no matter where it is growing.

Most vegetables need around 6 hours of light a day.

For instance, tomatoes do quite well in a container. You'll find that with the simple addition of a stake, you can even train them to grow vertically. There are even some dwarf varieties that are perfect for patios and indoor areas.

Take the time to see how you can improve your home and your dinner with organic container gardening - it's a lot easier than you might think!
