Essential Gardeners Supply Items

Get Off on the Right Foot

When you decide to grow plants and flowers, you need the right gardeners supply items.

For many people, the idea of having a garden is quite appealing, but what happens when you don't have the space or time you need? Where there is a will there's a way, and enterprising gardeners turn to container gardening for their fresh produce and flower needs.

Container gardening allows people with limited yard space, and even apartment dwellers, to grow wonderful green things. So, start by thinking about the supplies and tools that you'll need to get started.

If you want to buy supplies online (which saves time AND money), I recommend Windowbox.com.

The first thing you'll need, of course, is the container.

The container can take any number of shapes and sizes, depending how much space you have. For a small apartment, for instance, you might have a hanging pot for flowers or a windowsill box for herbs, while if you have a small yard available to you, you might want a 3 by 3 box divided up into 9 separate squares for different vegetables. Simply make sure that you have the space for the veggies to grow up and out, and that there is an appropriate amount of drainage.

The second gardeners supply that you need is plenty of soil to fill your needs.

Remember, you can't simply go and dig some dirt out of the ground, particularly if you live in the city. A good mix for container gardening is a third garden soil, a third compost, and a third sand. In addition to this, you can add a little bit of perlite for good drainage. You'll find that you can also hit the gardening centers and get some pre-mixed gardening soil to get you started.

You'll need a good way to water your container garden, especially if it hangs over your head, or is in a compact unit. You'll find that a watering can with a long spout can see to your needs, and that you can do a great deal of good simply by making sure that you water regularly. Remember that most vegetables need at least 6 hours of natural light a day, so make sure that you leave them in the right windows.

At the end of the day, container gardening is quite straightforward. Make sure that you have at least the supplies above, get a hold of some heirloom seeds or seedlings, and you'll be on your way to enjoying some home-grown greens!
