Container Gardening for Beginners

Container gardening for beginners

Bring Variety into Your Garden

Let's start with some container gardening for beginners. For those of you who are not very green fingered and not sure about gardening, or those who have only a small back garden, container gardening is a great and easy way to bring color into your garden, or cheer up a gloomy corner.

To start with, make sure you have containers with good drainage holes, or if your container is plastic, drill some holes. A lot of people, when using containers, break up an old plant pot, put the pieces in the bottom of your container, then the soil. This acts as a good drainage system.

Once you've chosen your pots, choose a good quality potting mix, one that is suitable for containers. After this is done, it's time to consider what type of plants you'd like in your pots.

There are lots to choose from - Geraniums, begonias with brightly colored flowers, pansies and many more; the choice is endless. While looking around, ask about some nicely scented flowers; it's great on a summers evening to sit in the garden with a glass of wine and a lovely fragrance wafting by.

Once you have chosen your pots, soil and plants, don't forget to buy a good fertilizer to feed your plants weekly or monthly, as this makes sure they receive all the nutrients that they require. Remember, when planting your pots you can use different plants in each container to give an abundance of color once they start to flower.

Let's go to the next phase of container gardening for beginners . . .

It's not only plants that can be grown in containers. You can be adventurous and create three or four pots close together and create a nice little herb garden, or sit a pot near a wall so you can create a trellis and plant some tomato plants. Outside of the front or back door, a nice container either side with a miniature conifer or rose bush can create a stunning effect for your home.

If you use your imagination, you can create some unique little gardening containers. Here's one idea - paint an old tire white and place it on some stones for drainage. Then fill it with soil and plant some trailing plants, and maybe a couple of geraniums in the center. Once they start to flower, it will create a very colorful display.

When choosing your plants, ask for advice at your garden center. A lot of plants may like a sunny position, while others prefer semi-shade. If you want to try tomato plants for the first time, ask about feeding and caring for the plants.

You've now had your first lesson in container gardening for beginners. Just wait 'til you see all your flowers in bloom; you will be pleased with the results.
